XDefiant hit us in May 2024, and we streamed what would become one of gaming's most spectacular implosions. Ubisoft San Francisco's free-to-play arena shooter—pulling factions from Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Far Cry, Splinter Cell—launched with actual promise. A million players in 2.5 hours. Eight million in the first month. Those 290 peak viewers represented the house trying to figure out if this was the Call of Duty competitor Ubisoft promised. We felt genuinely invested during those 8.5 hours, exploring the faction mechanics and fast-paced 6v6 gunplay. But now, knowing Ubisoft shut it down December 3rd with final servers closing June 3, 2025? XDefiant's arc became a cautionary tale about live service oversaturation.
